What is grounding?
In scientific terms, grounding is the process of removing the excess charge on an object by means of the transfer of electrons between it and another object of substantial size (such as the ground or the Earth). An effective ground is simply an object with significant enough size to share the overwhelming majority of excess charge. (And what better way to ground ourselves than with the Earth itself?).
We ground our electrical devices which enables excess energy to leave the system. If you touch a faulty appliance that is not grounded, you can potentially get shocked. Grounding applies to people as well. Someone who is not grounded cannot dispense excess energy. The environment around people who are not grounded can very well be chaotic and "charged". Someone who is not grounded can easily take things the wrong way and snap back at those around him or her, much like a faulty electrical device sending electrical shocks to those who come it contact with it.
How can we tell when we are not grounded?
When we are not grounded, our attention is scattered and we are unable to focus on the task before us. We are unaware of our surroundings and we are mentally "somewhere else". We misplace things, miss appointments and frequently make mistakes.
Why is it important to be grounded?
When we are grounded, we feel our connection to the earth. We feel a strong sense of well being and are able to deal with emotional matters in a calmer manner. Grounding our energy regulates the way our energy flows. It allows us to focus on our task at hand and helps quiet the "mind chatter" that usually hinders rather than supports us in reaching our goals.
When is it important to be grounded?
Being grounded is important in our daily activities. We do, after all, live in the physical world. Grounding puts us in the present moment so that we can actively live in the moment. When we are not in the present moment, we tend to have that vacant expression - the lights are on, but nobody's home. Grounding is also essential in any kind of spiritual or energy work. Grounding allows us to be alert and receptive to our environment.
